Tollpost ready for 20% increase of railway transport

Tollpost Globe’s Communications Manager, Mr. Ole A. Hagen, appeared yesterday morning on the NRK TV1 News. His message was that had the railway had sufficient capacity, Tollpost Globe might already tomorrow transfer 20% of the goods today being transported by road to the far more environmental friendly railway.

"Tollpost Globe wishes to transport an increased part of the goods by railway, but lack of capacity forces us to use transport by road. The industry now asks the politicians to increase railway capacity.

- We might have transferred 20 percent of the goods from road to railway by tomorrow given sufficient capacity. Unfortunately, the railway has not been developed in step with increased needs, says Tollpost Globe’s Communications Manager, Mr. Ole A. Hagen.

Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg surprised everybody by stating very ambitious goals for Norway’s climate policy towards the year 2050 in his speech at the party conference on Thursday April 19th this year:

  1. 10 percent above fulfilling the Kyoto Treaty obligations by year 2012
  2. 30 percent reduction of net greenhouse gas emissions by year 2020
  3. 100 percent cut in net greenhouse gas emissions by year 2050.

All goals include the purchase and sale of greenhouse gas quotas from abroad (net reduction).

It is today presumed that Norway will miss the domestic climate goal of 49.8 mill. ton CO2 equivalents, at an average for the period 2008-2012 of approximately nine mill. ton per year. In other words, we find ourselves in a situation where Norway’s emission of greenhouse gases increases by half a ton per year (approx. one percent per year).

- It is important to take measures that have effect in Norway. The greenhouse gas emissions from Norwegian road transport are increasing significantly. The emission increase from our own industry, goods transport, is the worst sinner with an increase of 50 percent from 1990 to 2005. The industry wants to do something about this situation, says Mr. Hagen.

In addition, it is profitable for Tollpost Globe to transport goods over long distances by railway and then distribute locally by car, rather than transporting by road all the way."
